Young Leaders Conference Points High School Students Toward College

February 25, 2019

An enthusiastic crowd of high school juniors and seniors, along with many parents, turned out for the Alamo Colleges District’s Young Leaders Conference at San Antonio College February 3.

The free event, organized by the office of Vice Chancellor for Student Success Dr. Adelina Silva, offers an opportunity for students and parents  to get a head start on preparing for college. Attendees gained valuable information on paying for college, support networks available, the importance of getting involved in college organizations and developing leadership potential to aid in college success.

Workshop sessions were led by college and community leaders, with a special keynote by the Honorable Judge Ron Rangel, presiding over the 379th District Court in San Antonio. Ten scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded to Karla Chavez, Kennedy High School; Elijah Cook and Nia Phachansiri, Brennan High School; Cheyanne Flores, Odayls Macias, Sarai Ortega and Larissa Gonzalez, McCollum High School; Luisana Castillo, Stevens High School; and Favour Ojuade, Johnson High School. Johnson High School won the 2019 Young Leaders Conference Spirit Award for having the largest number of participants. The conference is an annual event designed to encourage more high school graduates to attend and complete college.
