A glittering array of nearly 700 guests gathered at the Omni Hotel at the Colonnade recently for the 2019 Fabulous GED Brunch & Bazaar Scholarship Fundraiser.

Continuing in the holiday tradition of fellowship, fabulous food, and fantastic gifts, the nearly $60,000 raised from this year’s extravaganza will benefit two groups:

  • Community members pursuing a Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency (GED) through the Adult Learning Academy (ALA) at Palo Alto College (PAC)
  • GED graduates who continue their education at one of the colleges of the Alamo Colleges through the GED Empowerment to College Endowment scholarships

Keynote speaker for the event was State Representative Diego Bernal. Also speaking were Mayor Ron Nirenberg, Brunch founder Martha Tijerina, Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores, PAC President Dr. Robert Garza and Sheila Marlow Due, executive director of the Alamo Colleges Foundation. Bernal, vice-chair of the House Committee on Public Education, was instrumental in passing House Bill 3, which secured $11.6 billion for state public education and included funds for those taking GED exams.

PAC’s ALA is one of the few sites in San Antonio that offers GED preparation and testing in both English and Spanish. Students are given access to all campus resources necessary to help them succeed, including free tutoring, library services, computer, and Wi-Fi access and academic and personal counseling.

Since 2007, a group of devoted community volunteers, led by Tijerina, have come together each year to raise funds through this event for pivotal scholarships to help high school equivalency students cover program costs, GED testing fees, and vouchers and classroom supplies.
