Alamo Colleges District Economic Workforce Development cohosted the San Antonio Apprenticeship Accelerator event on November 18, 2022, with the City of San Antonio, SA WORX, and Workforce Solutions Alamo.

The Apprenticeship Accelerator event was the capstone event for National Apprenticeship Week and was held at San Antonio College’s Nursing and Allied Health Complex. Over 70 people from 30 organizations including 21 employers convened to hear about apprenticeship programs at Alamo Colleges and in the San Antonio area.

Mike Ramsey, Executive Director of Workforce Development for the City of San Antonio served as moderator for the main event, the apprenticeship employer panel. Panel members included Barry Burns, Regional Vice President of Human Resources for Methodist Healthcare, Quincy Harper, Military Recruiting Lead for Accenture Federal Services, Mary Batch, Talent Pipeline Consultant, Caterpillar, and Jon Turton, President of Texas Vista Medical Center. The panel members shared their organization’s experience with starting apprenticeships, partnerships, and expanding apprenticeships into other occupations. In the words of Jon Turton, starting an apprenticeship was a “No brainer.”

Other speakers included Dr. Sammi Morrill, Alamo College’s Associate Vice Chancellor of Operations, Economic Workforce Development, Christopher Mammen, SA WORX, Aurora Geis, New Apprenticeships, and Katherine Pipoly, Workforce Solutions Alamo. The agenda covered Talent Pipeline Management, the San Antonio Ready to Work program, and the fundaments of apprenticeships.

The call to action from the Accelerator event was for interested employers that are considering apprenticeships as a workforce solution to engage the Apprenticeship Accelerator committee to determine the next steps in the process.
