About Michelle Baland
Where is your hometown?
I was born in Angeles City, in the Philippines. As a former military brat, our family moved often, but I now consider San Antonio to be my hometown.
What is your educational background?
I have received a Masters of Arts in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Arts in History from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in higher education?
Like many older advisors, I fell into it! I began advising at Texas A&M University in College Station, in the Anthropology department, because of my educational background. However, I soon discovered how rewarding and engaging in advising students to pursue their career and educational interests could be, so I began to pursue it as a career. Overall, I have nine years of advising experience at different institutions of higher education, including almost three years, advising students pursuing a health profession.
Tell us a random fact about yourself.
One of my hobbies is highpointing, which is hiking to the highest point in every state. So far, I have been to five, including the highpoint of Texas, Guadalupe Peak.
