Reflecting on fifteen years of work in refugee resettlement, immigration education, and journalism, Lauren Markham will discuss the stories and myths behind and beneath the representation of migration in the news and in literature--including her own.

This talk will dig beneath the headlines to understand the ways that journalists and editors frame migration stories and related policy matters, what implicit messages these narratives send, and how we might better hear, share and understand stories of contemporary migration. 

Lauren Markham is a writer and reporter based in Northern California whose work most often concerns issues related to youth, migration, the environment and her home state of California.  Her essays, fiction and journalism have appeared in outlets such as VQR, Harper's, The Guardian, The New York Review of Books, The New Republic, Guernica, Mother Jones, Orion, and The Atlantic.

The Far Away Brothers was the winner of the 2018 Ridenhour Book Prize, the Northern California Book Award, and a California Book Award Silver Prize, and named a New York Times Book Critics’ Top Book of 2017.
