Fall 2020 Semester Plan

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all students, faculty and staff, San Antonio College has created a learning and safety plan for the Fall 2020 semester. 

Most programs and courses offered during the Fall 2020 term will be taught online or by remote instruction, using Zoom for regularly scheduled meeting days and times. Students and most faculty and staff have been learning, teaching and working remotely since the pandemic reached San Antonio in the spring.

CTE Courses to be Held on Campus

The exception will be Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.  The campus will have a limited reopening to accommodate these courses of study that cannot be taught remotely and require hands-on, in-person learning and skills assessments.  After the Thanksgiving holiday, these programs will also transition to remote learning for the remainder of the fall semester. Health & Safety Protocols

The college has incorporated state-of-the art health safety protocols for CTE students who return to campus during the limited reopening.  These include designated entrances into buildings, health/temperature screening areas, wearing of face coverings and other measures to create a safe learning environment.

Financial Help for Early Childhood Care

The early childhood program has funds from a Department of Education CCAMPIS grant to help pay for childcare for students with children from six-months to five-years.

Students enrolled in CTE programs can apply for the CCAMPIS grant to help pay for off-campus care at select accredited early childhood programs. Through the grant, parents enrolled in the program will only have to pay $15 - $20 per week for childcare. The grant is open to other SAC students with young children as well.

To remain eligible for the grant, students must complete these requirements:

  • Earn grades of C or higher in all courses 
  • Maintain enrollment in a minimum of nine credit hours 
  • Check ACES email on a daily basis 
  • Attend three scheduled parent workshops 
  • Meet with child’s teacher 
  • Complete four volunteer hours 
  • Meet all required deadlines for submitting documentation

  • Remote Learning or Synchronous Instruction: The same as a standard course only on Zoom. Students will log-in during class hours and be lectured face-to-face with an instructor digitally. Canvas and additional remote-access tools may be used.

  • Online or Asynchronous Instruction: A traditional, fully-distanced, online course. Students will have a series of tasks or modules to complete each week but may do so on their own time. Online courses are delivered entirely on Canvas, though they may use additional online tools.

  • On-Campus: Limited in-person, face-to-face, instruction. On-campus courses will be limited to specific programs as identified by the college.

How will classes be delivered this fall?

Fall 2020 classes will be delivered remotely with exceptions for career and technical courses and some arts and sciences courses that require face-to-face learning. Please contact your certified advisor for more details.

Will Alamo Colleges host campus events this fall?

To ensure the health and safety of our college community, no on-campus events will be held in Fall 2020. This includes recreational sports, student organization meetings and events, or various location-based activities.

Will students be permitted to travel on behalf of the college this fall?

Alamo Colleges is committed to the health and safety of our students, as well as their academic and career development. As such, all student development activities (Student Life, experiential learning, etc.) this Fall will occur remotely and travel on behalf of the college is not permitted.

If I have questions regarding enrollment, testing, advising, registration, class payment, or financial aid, can I stop by the college for assistance?

Student Services at each college will maintain a one-stop, one-office, student support location (by appointment only) on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. for essential on-site student support as early as August 10th. Will there be health screenings and temperature checks on campus?

Temperature checks will be required for all students, faculty, and staff on campus for Fall 2020. When entering a campus, students, faculty, staff, and visitors will pass through a designated entry point where a temperature check and health screening questionnaire will be conducted and masking will be required to ensure the safest possible environment is maintained for everyone and to control the number of individuals in each college and at any one time. Individuals who do not pass the health screening or masking standards will not be granted access.

Am I required to wear a mask the entire time I am on campus?

Yes. Face coverings will be worn by all on-campus and social distancing protocols will be followed.

Am I required to provide my own PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)?

Masks, gloves and hand sanitizer will be available at each entry point and for anyone in need. For example, if a student forgets to bring a mask, they will be provided one at the entry point.

What should I do if I begin to feel ill or develop COVID-like symptoms?

Each day before returning to campus make sure you are free of ANY symptoms potentially related to COVID-19. If you begin to develop one of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever (100 degrees F or higher), chills, repeated shaking with chills, runny nose or new sinus congestion, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, fatigue, new gastrointestinal symptoms, or new loss of taste or smell please contact your instructor, make plans to stay at home, and pursue medical attention. Do not attend class if you have any of the symptoms outlined above.

Will federal work study (FWS) employment be available this fall?

Who can I contact if I’m having difficulty coping, not feeling well emotionally, or in need of food and living assistance?

In additional to the normal stressors that any student may feel, the COVID-19 pandemic may have created additional stress and uncertainty for you.  If you are an enrolled student, the services of our Advocacy Center, which includes counseling, is available to you. Please contact the Alamo Colleges Helpline 210-486-1111 for assistance.  

What if I don’t have access to technology to access online services?

If you need a loaner Laptop Computer or Internet Hotspot to assist your educational endeavors please contact your college’s Information Technology department at the number below to see if you qualify. These no-cost resources are available for immediate check-out.
