SAC Dental Assisting Program Recognized as One of the Best in Texas
November 4, 2019
San Antonio College’s dental assisting program has been ranked as the #2 Dental Assistant School in Texas for 2019-20 by nursingprocess.org, an online guide to nursing and health care education. Currently the site reaches out to more than 100,000 students every month from across the country.
The website considered several factors in creating their rankings, including admissions rate, graduation rate, student-to-faculty ratio and net price. In addition, the website editorial team took into account the overall reputation of the college.
“I was very excited and honored that we were being recognized,” said Carmen Santiago, program coordinator and full-time faculty member in the dental assistant program. “I immediately sent out the email to our faculty, staff and chair because this could not have been achieved without everyone’s help.”
SAC’s dental assisting program is a 12-month, full-time, day program limited to 24 students. Enrollment takes place only at the start of the fall semester. Once students finish the program, they graduate with an associate of applied science and a certificate level 1 degree in dental assisting. The dental assisting program is one of only eight programs in Texas accredited by the American Dental Association.
SAC student Emily Krock said the faculty are an important reason why the dental assisting program is outstanding. “They are really accommodating. They want to see you succeed,” said Krock. “I feel like they all really care about you. They will go out of their way to help you.”
Georgia Frazier, another dental assisting student, agreed. “They really put forth their all to help us succeed. They are always there for any questions I have,” she said.
The SAC program also has an excellent reputation among local dental offices. Student Brianna Villanueva said she recently went to her dentist’s office for a cleaning and told the staff she was she was in the SAC dental assisting program. “And they said ‘whenever you are done, you come back and apply here. We like hiring people from that program because it is really good,’” she said.
