What is the Spanish Program?
The Communications & Learning Department offers five levels of Spanish courses: SPAN 1300; 1411; 1412; 2311; and 2312. We have a transfer agreement with all major Texas four-year colleges and universities so that SPAN 1411, 1412, 2311, and 2312 taken at our College all transfer to their institutions as Foreign Language credit.
For students who are unable to attend an on-campus or face-to-face course, St. Philip’s College offers the flexibility of online courses. With many colleges requiring four semesters: 1411, 1412, 2311, and 2312 of a Foreign Language to graduate, about half of all college students enrolled in a Foreign Language courses throughout the country are studying Spanish.
What will I learn?The goal of the program is to provide students a college-level approach to language acquisition, using the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) guidelines for speaking, reading, listening, and writing resources and experiences. Students will also acquire cultural competence in diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. What can I do with this course of study?A student with a background in Spanish can transfer to a 4-year university to pursue a Bachelor's Degree and will easily qualify for careers and employment in the following areas:
Virtual Reality in the Spanish classroom (Title III)The Spanish Department at St. Philip's College participates in a multi-disciplinary Title III grant for the incorporation of virtual reality in the classroom. What is special about the Spanish program?Many business professionals, medical personnel, and college students have chosen to learn Spanish. Our courses typically include students who are currently working full-time and/or have already completed their higher education, and who are returning to the classroom to develop their Spanish language skills because their employer either requires additional training, or the students see the desirability of increasing their Foreign Language skills. Speaking two or more languages enhances an individual’s mental skills at every level, and improves cultural insights, and overall workforce eligibility. Individuals who speak a second-language typically earn at least 3 percent more in their salary. Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the United States, and the number of people who speak Spanish, or who have grown up in a Spanish-speaking environment(s) continues to increase.
