Difficult situations can get in the way of academic success. Trained and licensed staff provide free, short-term, personal counseling services to currently enrolled students. The Counselors are available to listen to your concerns including anxiety, depression, loss of a relationship, and other mental health-related issues.

Counselors Services staff will also refer students to community resources according to their individualized needs. Here are some important resources to consider if you need information or assistance.
The Center for Health Care Services offers mental health services, crisis care, services for veterans, treatment for substance use disorders, services for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and much more. The 24-hour Crisis & Substance Abuse Helpline is 210-223-SAFE (7233) or 1-800-316-9241. For routine (non-emergency) assistance, call 210-261-1250 (Adults) and 210-261-3350 (Children).
The United Way provides referrals to agencies and services near you. Just dial 2-1-1 or 210-227-4357.
Community Resource Guide also provides a list of resources including child care, medical care, crisis care, and food and housing assistance.

Substance Use & Mood Disorders Screenings:
Free, anonymous online screenings are available to all St. Philip's College students. Screenings are available for: Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder, Alcohol Abuse, Eating Disorders, Anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The screening is provided so that you may find out, in a few minutes, whether or not professional consultation would be helpful for you.

The Counseling Services staff understands the important role faculty and staff play in the general well-being of students. We are pleased to provide several services in support of creating the best possible environment for our students:
Consultation
Faculty and staff members are welcome to contact Counseling Services if they notice concerning student behavior. Faculty and staff members are also encouraged to complete a SOBI report when they observe student behaviors that are disruptive, violent, or may require follow-up from Student Success personnel.

Remember: Contact the Alamo Colleges Police Department at 210-485-0911 if a student appears to be in immediate danger or appears to pose an immediate threat to others.
Outreach Services
Counseling Services hosts mental health events and can arrange to present to your class or student group on a variety of topics including:

Training and Workshops
Counseling Services provides training to faculty and staff groups on topics such as an overview of Counseling Services and how to refer students to Counseling Services. Please consider training for your next department or division meeting!

Currently, enrolled students can attend three counseling sessions per issue. If you are taking a class at SPC, then you are eligible.
Consultation services are available to faculty and staff who are concerned about a student. Benefits-eligible Alamo employees can seek free and confidential counseling through the Employee Assistance Program (https://www.deeroaks.com/contact/) by calling the 24-hour helpline at 1-866-327-2400.
Students use counseling services for many different reasons. Here are some of the topics that have been discussed in previous sessions.

Please arrive 15-30 minutes early before your first appointment to complete some forms. You will meet with a Master-degreed counselor for about 60 minutes. Towards the end of the session, you and the counselor will discuss your next steps.
