Invasive Cardiovascular Technology
What is the Invasive Cardiovascular Technology program?
The program proudly prepares students to work in the specialized field of cardiovascular medicine, operating in the Invasive Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Students will become competent in performing complex cardiac procedures including Percutaneous Transcatheter Coronary Angiography (PTCA), Peripheral Coronary Interventions (PCI), Electrophysiology studies, Peripheral Vascular Angiography/Interventions, Hemodynamic Cardiac Pressure Monitoring, and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Graduates of the program qualify to challenge the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) credential exam by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Program Credentialing
The Invasive Cardiovascular Technology program leads to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, which encompasses a four-semester and 60 semester credit hours course of study. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) credential offered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), but only after satisfying the requirements set forth by CCI. **Please refer to CCI’s RCIS credentialing requirements for further guidance. Furthermore, qualified techs that meet credentialing and facility requirements to work in the cardiac cath lab, may apply for a Limited Medical Radiologic Technology (LMRT) License (**State of Texas requirement to operate radiographic equipment within the lab).
Graduation, certifications, and credentials are separate skill identifiers and are the responsibility of the individual student.

Admissions Requirements:
Student applications are reviewed and selected prior to admission to the program (in accordance with school applications policy).
Prerequisite Requirements:
- BIOL 2404 Human Anatomy & Physiology
- ENGL 1301 Composition I
- MATH 1314 College Algebra
- Overall GPA 2.7 or higher
Students may submit application with pre-requisite courses in process.

Applicants that have NOT completed the requirements have until the admissions deadline outlined in the SPC Admission Requirements and SPC Student Handbook. The Invasive Cardiovascular Technology Program begins a new cohort EVERY Fall Semester. *Student selection is made following a formal application screening review completed by the program leadership as outlined in the program application process. EVERY student will be given a fair opportunity to apply and undergo selection. However, NOT all candidates applying will be selected, and students must understand this program is a very demanding, highly critical career field.
Selection Process:
All accepted applicants will be ranked in accordance with a program point system. The top 15-25 applicants will be interviewed. Notifications of selection will be sent out by June 15th. Students accepted into the Invasive Cardiovascular Program will be provided directions on when to attend the mandatory orientation.
Additional Requirements & Information:
Students are required to attend clinical rotations as an integral part of the training program. Clinical sites are located around the San Antonio area and students are expected to travel up to 100 miles to clinical sites.
