Sociology
What is Sociology?
According to the American Sociological Association, sociology is:
- The study of society
- A social science involving the study of the social lives of people, groups, and societies
- The study of our behavior as social beings
- The scientific study of social aggregations
- An overarching unification of ALL studies of humankind, including history, psychology, and economics
What will I learn in Sociology?Sociology courses include content that requires psychological, emotional, and intellectual maturity. Content includes social injustices related to race, class, and gender. Sociology courses involve the study and informed discussion of topics such as sexuality, deviance, and drug use/abuse. All sociology courses at St. Philip’s College are courses designed for college students—the same content and rigor as courses at 4-year colleges and universities.
What can I do with my Sociology A.A. Degree?Sociology is a pre-major, designed for transfer to a 4-year college or university. Most of our sociology students transfer to UTSA or Texas State, for example. St. Philip’s has online advising guides for every transfer college or university. |
What do sociologists do?The web site for the Bureau of Labor Statistics provides information about job choices, job outlook, and salaries for sociologists: What Sociology Courses are offered at St. Philip’s?
