Alumnus Spotlight: Dr. Antonio J. Webb
August 22, 2023
One of St. Philip’s College's notable success stories is alumnus, Dr. Antonio J. Webb. The orthopedic spinal surgeon is a board-certified in all medical conditions related to the spine, back, and neck, including degenerative, deformity, trauma, cervical/lumbar arthroplasty, and minimally invasive spine surgery.
Webb leads the diversity charge in his field as one of only two Black spinal surgeons in San Antonio. Black spinal surgeons only account for 1.9% of overall surgeons in the United States. When asked why he wanted to pursue a job in spinal surgery, he replied “Growing up, I never saw anyone who looked like me in the medical field, and I want to be a source of inspiration."
At SPC President Dr. Adena Williams Loston’s invitation, Dr. Webb shared his experiences and foundation work with college leaders.
“Every student’s success is our success,” Dr. Loston said. “It’s a joy and an honor when our alumni come to visit. We get to see the fruits of our labor and the trajectory from the foundation they earned here.”
It is not just the professional achievements that are a source of pride for SPC. Webb is also making significant contributions to the San Antonio community through his local non-profit, Webb Family Foundation, which seeks to increase the number of African Americans in the field of Orthopedic and Spine Surgery through mentorship, guidance, and hands-on exposure to the medical field.
