Graduate Spotlight: Jaime Palma
May 9, 2024
Jaime Palma will graduate with his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Advanced Manufacturing Technology this May. His employer paid for Jaime's classes in full through the Texas FAME program. While taking a full course load, Jaime worked full-time at night as an engineer technician for Tower Semiconductor.
Through the Texas FAME program partnership with St. Philip’s, Jaime was able to apply the knowledge he gained through hands-on experience with control panels, pneumatic trainers, industrial robots, electrical trainers, programmable logical controllers, and coding to his job in real-time.
“I had to tough it out sometimes.” When asked about his motivation to continue with a full schedule, he replied, “I kept pushing myself because I knew it was a huge opportunity. I’m a first-generation student; I’m doing it for my family.”
Most of Jaime’s classes were at the St. Philip’s College Southwest Campus (SWC), with just a few online. Jaime described SWC as a tight-knit community, saying, “I really like the campus. Everyone knows each other. The professors are cool and so knowledgeable. They are always willing to help you out. They’ve been in the industry for a long time. They helped me understand the theory behind my work. They know exactly what employers are looking for.”
After graduating, Jaime plans to continue his studies at SPC in electrical engineering and then pursue his bachelor's degree in the same field of study at the University of Texas at San Antonio. “When I began studying at St. Philip’s, it was during the pandemic, and I only expected to get a two-year degree. After being here and experiencing this unique support system, I want to go on for more.”
Congratulations Jaime!
