Nursing Generic Program A.A.S.

A two-year program that prepares the student to become a registered nurse and earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing. Upon successful completion of the nursing education program, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) authorized by, and administered through, the Texas Board of Nursing.

What will I learn?

The student has the opportunity to learn the art and science of nursing; both are necessary for a registered nurse to practice nursing care. A variety of learning venues include the classroom, a fully-equipped simulation hospital on campus, and direct patient care in the hospital or other clinical settings. These venues provide the experiences to enable the graduate to enter the profession as a competent novice nurse.

 

What’s special about the program?

This program is a two-year nursing program designed to provide the tools and skills necessary for a student with no medical experience or training.

Upon successful completion of the first semester of nursing courses, students qualify to test for the certified nurse aide examination.

Nursing Career Mobility LVN to RN A.A.S./Military to RN, A.A.S.

A one-year program that awards credit to licensed vocational nurses and military medics with evidence of a license or DOD13 receive 9 credit hours of coursework. This tract terminates in an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Nursing.

 

Admission and Prerequisite Requirements

The Career Mobility Track serves the educational needs of students with prior education and work experience in the medical field who wish to become registered nurses. The Mobility Track requires a one-year time frame, including three (3) consecutive semesters. Theory coursework is done online, however, all clinical labs are supervised by nursing faculty in local healthcare facilities. Students admitted to the Kerrville campus have both coursework and clinical laboratory work provided in that area unless some optimum learning experiences can only be provided through the San Antonio campus or San Antonio clinical facilities.

 

The Career Mobility Track offers a nursing study option for

  1. Licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs) with a current Texas nurse license and a practice record in good standing with the Texas Board of Nursing; or
  2. Military service members and U.S. military veterans who completed training within the last ten years as Army Combats Medics, Navy Corpsmen, or Air Force Medics.

This program supports upward mobility of military and licensed vocational nurses to expand upon their scope of practice.

 

What can I do with this course of study?

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and be eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Upon passing the exam, the graduate will be a registered nurse in the State of Texas and ready to begin a career in the nursing profession.
