Differences between remote and online learning

Virtual classrooms are becoming increasingly popular for many reasons, most notably the changes in our world prompted by COVID-19. While some students prefer face-to-face courses, others prefer to learn in a virtual environment. If you are interested in earning your degree online at the Alamo Colleges and have already begun exploring your options, you will probably come across two terms: “remote learning” and “online learning”.

Although they sound the same, “remote learning” and “online learning” classes are designed and delivered differently. These terms are becoming increasingly popular as the workforce and world of education continue to adapt to changing demands. It is important to understand the difference so you can make the best choice for your personal and professional goals.

At the Alamo Colleges, remote learning courses will require you and your classmates to be present online on the same day and at the same time, just as you would in a face-to-face class. The instructor will present the lesson via Zoom or alternate video conferencing platforms, while you attend from a remote environment, such as your kitchen table or office desk. Remote learning is a great option for those who like to jump in and ask questions or learn best when the material is presented in a live, interactive environment.

In online learning courses, you are not required to be present online at the same time and on the same day as your instructor and classmates. Instead, you are responsible for reviewing the materials and completing quizzes, tests, and assignments on your own time and at your own pace. Your instructor will require you to complete coursework by a certain day and time; however, you are still granted more flexibility in terms of when you complete those requirements. Online learning is perfect for those who can’t fit weekly class sessions into their schedules or who learn best by utilizing written and recorded resources provided by the instructor.

No matter which delivery method you choose, it’s important to understand that both remote and online learning will require you to demonstrate discipline and take full ownership of reviewing and mastering course material. However, both modes provide plenty of opportunities for you to engage with your instructor and classmates in a meaningful way. Rest assured that, although COVID-19 has caused uncertainty in many aspects of our lives, you can find stability in the pursuit of online or remote learning.
