Verification

What is verification?

Verification is a review process that confirms the accuracy of all student, parent, and spouse data reported on the FAFSA. Selection of students to verify is provided by the U.S. Department of Education and is completed by the Alamo Colleges, in partnership with our verification provider, ProVerifier+ (ProEd).

Selected students are required to submit documentation such as Federal Tax Transcripts, W2s, and a verification forms in order complete the verification process and to determine their financial aid eligibility.

How are selected students notified?

If you were selected, you will get a notification in your student email with instructions from ProEd on how to log into their verification dashboard, ProVerify Student Portal. You will also see your verification requirement listed within your ACES account.

  • 1. Check your Alamo email: You will receive emailed instructions directly from ProEd on how to complete the verification process.

    2. Log in to ProEd's portal regularly: Follow the steps provided in the email to log in to the ProVerify Student Portal, or you can find the link to the portal in ACES on the 'MyPage' tab.

    3. Submit all documents promptly: Once in the portal, submit any requested verification worksheets and tax documentation as soon as possible. The faster you submit your verification documentation, the faster we are able to disburse your aid.

    4. Check your Alamo email for updates and additional requests: You may receive additional communication from ProEd, or our Student Financial Aid Office, asking for additional documentation or corrections to be made in order to finish your verification.

    5. Look out for any updates to your financial aid awards: Once your verification has been completed by ProEd, any available financial aid that you qualify for will be added to your ACES account.  Finding your financial aid awards on ACES tutorial

What happens during the verification process?

After submitting all required verification documentation, it may be required for corrections to be made to the FAFSA. Your corrected FAFSA will be sent to the U.S. Department of Education in order for your verification selection to be cleared and your FAFSA approved.

Once complete, you will receive a notification to your Alamo email regarding any updates to your financial aid awards.

Are there any common verification mistakes I can avoid during this process?

Do not submit any documentation unless requested as this will complicate the review process.

Other common mistakes that may extend the processing timeline include submitting:

  • unsigned documents
  • unreadable documents
  • missing and incomplete documents
  • documents with data that contradict each other
  • unresolved issues on your FAFSA
What happens if I don't complete verification?

You will be unable to receive most forms of financial aid — including Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work Study, Federal Direct Loans, state aid, and Alamo Promise — until the verification process is completed.

What is a Tax Return Transcript and how do I obtain one if requested?

A Tax Return Transcript is an official document from the IRS listing all income tax information. If requested, you may obtain a Tax Return Transcript by logging into the IRS website.

May I submit a copy of my 1040 Tax Return from a third party agency (H&R Block, TurboTax) if requested?

If requested, a SIGNED copy of yours and/or your parent(s) 1040 tax return will satisfy the requirement.

The IRS Tax Return Transcript mentioned above will also still satisfy this request.

What if I did not file taxes?

Independent students and parent(s) of dependent students who are chosen for verification and who did not file taxes, regardless of the amount of income (even zero), may be required to submit a Verification of Non-Filing (VONF) letter from the IRS.

If requested, you can obtain a Verification of Non-Filing by going to the IRS website and completing IRS Form 4506-T. Select Box 7 and submit the letter with your verification documents when received.

What if I am undocumented and cannot request a Verification of Non-Filing Letter (VONF) from the IRS?

If requested, individuals without a Social Security Number (SSN), Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), or Employer Identification Number (EIN) must provide a signed form certifying they are unable to obtain a VONF IRS form. Contact the Student Financial Aid Office for more information.
