About Miya Hunter-Willis

My name is Miya Hunter-Willis and I recently joined the History Department in Fall 2023. I teach United States History I and II as well as African American History I and II at Northeast Lakeview College. As a native of the Washington, D.C. metro area, I’m excited to bring a little East Coast flavor down to Texas!

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Virginia (Go ‘Hoos) in Psychology and African American Studies. As an undergraduate, I had several jobs, but it was my position as a research assistant for the Virginia Foundation of the Humanities that guided me toward the discipline of history. In graduate school, I earned my Master’s Degree in History at Marshall University (Go Herd!). I married the love of my life and our family of two quickly expanded to six! Shortly thereafter, I chose to leave my students at the Community College of Baltimore County and become a stay-at-home mom. For over a decade, I spent my time volunteering with the local school board, tutoring middle and high school students, and serving as a Maryland History Day judge.

Now that I’m in Texas, learning about the rich culture of the mid-west has been rewarding. Most of all, getting to know the amazing staff and students at NLC has been the best part of my transition (aside from the AMAZING Tex-Mex food). I’m hoping that sharing about my career pathway will help students recognize that all decisions don’t mean disaster…some are simply delays.
