Chemistry
What is the program?
Chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances, and how substances interact with energy. These courses permit the student to fulfill the lower-division chemistry for transfer programs to four-year institutions as well as to acquire the necessary skills for employment.
What will I learn?Lecture courses have accompanying lab courses that provide direct hands-on experience with chemistry and chemicals. The labs are tailored towards the demonstration and practice of principles discussed in the lecture class. Students will learn foundational scientific qualities including:
What can I do with this course of study?Careers in chemistry include "traditional" activities (e.g. analysis, synthesis), interdisciplinary fields (e.g. materials, biophysics), and related professions such as medicine, patent law, education, technical writing, art conservation, forensic science, and many others. Most of the courses are transfer courses for the student who will eventually pursue credentials in allied health, a Bachelor's of Science Degree, or a Pre-Med degree at a 4-year college or university. |
What's special about the program?Understanding basic chemistry concepts is important for many things. Chemistry is involved in everything we do, from growing and cooking food to cleaning our homes and bodies to launching a space shuttle. Chemistry is one of the physical sciences that help us to describe and explain our world.
