NLC Speech Professor Named Community College Educator of the Year

Barbara Mayo, assistant professor of speech, received the Community College Educator of the Year Award from the Texas Speech Communication Association (TSCA). Each district, represented by the TEA Regions, can submit a nominee. The nominees are required to submit a portfolio which includes their contribution to the organization and letters of support from students and colleagues. The nominees were announced at the TSCA luncheon, and she received her award at the President's Reception.

Vivian Martinez, former NLC student, credited Ms. Mayo's speech class for helping her master her interview that helped her receive the prestigious Terry Scholarship. Additionally, Lisa Phillips was a 2012 student in Ms. Mayo's speech class. Phillip's said "her guidance and teaching helped me to learn effective communication not only in the classroom, but also in everyday situations. I have been able to take what she taught me and connect with others to successfully establish two non-profit organizations and complete my own TEDx Talk"

Both Phillips and Martinez credit Ms. Mayo for giving them confidence to develop their public speaking skills, which continue to provide them with new opportunities.

Mayo has held a number of different offices in TSCA including President in 2007-2008. Additionally, Ms. Barbara Mayo has been employed at NLC since 2006 and was one of the institution's Founding Academic Chairpersons.
