Northeast Lakeview College Student Named District-wide Student of the Month

Northeast Lakeview College is proud to announce that Belen Hernandez-Zavala was named the July 2023 AlamoPROMISE Student of the Month for the Alamo Colleges District.  Ms. Hernandez-Zavala is a graduate of Wagner High School, and is currently a student at Northeast Lakeview College in the Business & Entrepreneurship AlamoINSTITUTE.

Belen is a first-generation student and a Student Ambassador in the NLC Career Engaged Learning Office. She is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Hispanic Student Organization.  In her spare time, she enjoys producing her own music and spending time with her four frogs. She also visits El Salvador annually to visit her dad where she volunteers with him in a small town building houses.

Struggling with mental health issues during her senior year of high school and with no funds to pay for college, AlamoPROMISE gave her the opportunity to pursue higher education. She is grateful for the opportunities the PROMISE program and the NLC staff and faculty provided. Belen credits the opportunity as a Student Ambassador for helping her gain confidence within herself. And says that her advisor and all the staff at NLC are always helpful and supportive.

Belen says she loves both numbers and data and analyzing them. She plans to graduate from NLC and then transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Her ultimate goal is to completer her Master’s in Statistics and become a college professor and an inspiration to other college students just as her instructors have inspired her.

Belen was officially recognized at the July 25 Board of Trustees meeting.
