St. Philip's Colleges Honors Mary Cottier with Professor Emeritus Status

At the Alamo Colleges District Board Meeting on Dec. 19, Professor Mary Cottier was named Professor Emeritus, unanimously by the ACD Board of Trustees, recognizing her exemplary service, commitment, and contributions to St. Philip’s College.

She began as a mathematics professor at St. Philip’s College in 1989 and by 1995 she had received tenure. During her time at the college, she has held various positions. She served as the chair of the Mathematics, Computer Science, and Business Administration Department from 2003 to 2007, and from 2009 to 2014, she was the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Cottier helped to establish the first developmental math learning lab in 2004 and 2005. This lab eventually became Math World – SPC’s premier math tutoring lab. The center serves 20,000 yearly and has become an integral part of the success of math students at the college.

She is a two-time recipient of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award for recognition of her exemplary support to students in 1997 and 2007. In 2006 and 2008, she was given the St. Philips’ College Teaching Excellence Award. Her work as chair earned her the District Council of Chairs Award in 2010. In 2020, she was nominated by St. Philip’s College for the Piper Professor Award.

Cottier was instrumental in developing the Memorial Early College High School with Comal ISD, the first early college high school for St. Philip’s College. She also helped to establish St. Philip’s College Early College High School in San Antonio ISD and Seguin Early College High School.
