St. Philip’s College Student, Tony Sanders returned to the classroom after nearly three decades. On Friday, Dec.15, Tony will cross the stage at the Freeman Coliseum, defying the odds, as he receives his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Electrical Trades.

His decision to return to school was fueled by a desire to build an economically stable future for his family. Tony’s dedication was unwavering.

“I did it for my wife and my kids. I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself. At first, it was scary. I hadn’t been in school since 1985,” Tony said. “When I looked around there were students younger than me and smarter than me, but I had professors who cared about me and my success. They walked beside me and helped me.”

Tony excelled both inside and outside of the classroom, engaging in numerous clubs and organizations. He served as the Student Government Vice President at Southwest Campus, was voted Homecoming King for the 2021-2022 academic school year, attended the Student Leadership Institute, served in the Student District Council, earned a place in Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, and was selected for the National Society of Leadership and Success.

As Tony looks towards the future, he envisions using his education to create a better life for his family and to inspire others.

Congratulations Tony!
