NLC received the Gold Veterans Education Excellence Recognition Award (VEERA) for 2023. The award, given by the Texas Veterans Commission, recognizes public colleges and universities for their excellence in providing education and related services to veterans and the military-connected community (Tex. Govt. Code § 434.252). Northeast Lakeview College applied for recognition and showcased its commitment toward ensuring the academic success of these individuals for the Academic Year 2022-2023. NLC received Gold recognition in 2022 and Silver recognition in 2021
Northeast Lakeview College is proud to announce that it received a $189,401 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission as part of the Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) Program. Funds will be used to purchase and install equipment to initially train 75 students as network and computer systems administrators, with additional students to be trained in the future. An official check presentation took place on May 22.
April 2023 – The NLC Men’s Basketball Team emerged victorious in the Texas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship for the 2nd time since 2019. Their 2023 record was 22 wins and 3 losses. They received their championship rings in a ceremony held in August. A conference banner was hung in the Gym earlier this Summer in their honor. Congratulations and go Nighthawks!
The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program (Aspen) selected Dr. Tangila Dove, Vice President for Student Success at Northeast Lakeview College, as one of 35 leaders selected for the 2023-24 class of the Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship. This program, delivered in collaboration with the Stanford Educational Leadership Initiative, prepares the next generation of community college presidents to transform institutions to achieve higher and more equitable levels of student success. The fellows, selected through a competitive process, will work closely with highly accomplished community college presidents, Aspen leaders, and Stanford University faculty over ten months to learn from field-leading research, define and assess student success at their colleges, and clarify their visions for excellent and equitable outcomes for students while in college and after they graduate.

Northeast Lakeview College student, Talia Christian, is one of eight students selected to participate in (Achieving the Dream) ATD’s 2022 DREAM Student Scholars program which provides tailored leadership development and networking opportunities. Each Scholar will present at DREAM 2022, lending their voice and perspective to an audience of higher education leaders, practitioners, and advocates. Talia currently serves as the Alamo Colleges District Student Trustee Alternate.
Northeast Lakeview College received $25,000 from the Grow With Google Hispanic Serving Institution Career Readiness Program. The Grow with Google HSI Career Readiness Program offers a semester-long in-person and online digital skills program to help students prepare for critical steps in their career journey. Whether preparing for an internship or first job, students will have an opportunity to join interactive video and in-person lessons, participate in activities that help them master key digital and real-world skills, and meet with peers or career counselors for follow-up discussions. The program is in partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU).
Dr. Chantae Recasner, Dean for Academic Success at Northeast Lakeview College, was recognized by the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET) with the honor of the 2021 Sally Johnstone award. This award is a very special award within the online learning community. The Sally M. Johnstone award is named after WCET’s founding executive director and recognizes a professional who has made an outsized contribution for their ‘rank‘ to the digital learning community with the intention of recognizing thought leadership, excellence in practice, and demonstrated leadership capabilities. This award is meant to honor up-and-coming leaders in higher education. WCET is the leader in the practice, policy, & advocacy of digital learning in higher education

Dr. Veronica Garcia, Northeast Lakeview College president is one of 25 leaders from across the country selected for the 2021-22 class of the Aspen New Presidents Fellowship. This program supports community college presidents in the early years of their tenure as they aim to achieve higher and more equitable levels of student success. The Fellows will engage over nine months in residential sessions and virtual learning to develop strategies to meet their goals for student success and equity with data to assess challenges and progress.
Northeast Lakeview College was one of fourteen (14) colleges and universities honored by the Texas Veterans Commission and received the first-ever Veteran Education Excellence Recognition. This new award established by the State of Texas recognizes universities and colleges that provide excellence in education and related services that significantly contribute to the academic success of student veterans and military-connected students. The college received the 2021 Silver Award.
Dr. Veronica Garcia, NLC President, was selected to serve as an Honorary Commander for Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. Honorary commanders are civic leaders chosen from communities around the JBSA metropolitan area and are paired with 502nd ABW military commanders and senior leaders. Throughout the course of their service, these individuals attend and participate in various community events, as well as activities that support the military. Randolph AFB is located in NLC’s service area. NLC continues to expand its connection with the military and Veterans. Dr. Garcia served in a similar role back in 2018 as Honorary Commander for the 12th Training Squad at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. Her role focused on the support of the large student body at the 12th Flying Training Wing.
The Northeast Lakeview College Academic Support Center is recognized by The College Reading & Learning Association awards ITTPC program. CRLA authorizes the Academic Support Center to issue certificates to tutors meeting its CRLA-approved requirements for the following program certification level(s): Level I Certified Tutor. NLC continues to excel and provide outstanding support to its students.
Sabrina Hammel, associate professor of political science received the Regional Citizen of the Year Award from Alamo Area Council of Government (AACOG). She was nominated by Commissioner Tommy Calvert for service work within the local community. One such project is her annual cleanup event at Montgomery Elementary where she is the lead faculty member for the “Spirit of Renewal” project, a community outreach project that provides trash collection services, including bulk pick-up to an unincorporated part of Bexar County that lacks basic community services. The Regional Citizen of the Year Award honors individuals who have contributed to the betterment of the AACOG region. The award is given to individuals residing within the Alamo Region who demonstrate a dedication to the region through their activities outside the scope of their employment.
Dr. Veronica Garcia, NLC President, Daisy Carmona, Academic Program Coordinator, and Allen Miller, Chair of Math and Computer Science, were recognized as Trusted Leaders as part of the Emerging Leaders Program Graduation Ceremony. The Trusted Leader Award is presented to individuals who inspire trust. The Emerging Leaders Program is a 5 ½ - month leadership development program designed to prepare high potential employees for future roles, positions, or projects of greater responsibility. The program utilizes the principles of leadership based on Stephen Covey and recognizes individuals who best exemplify these principles during the program’s annual completion ceremony.
Angie Hager, associate professor of English, was recognized and given the 2018 Service Award from the Texas Tri-County Chamber for her 6 years of service as NLC’s representative to the Board of Directors. The Tri-County Chamber, formerly known as the Metrocom Chamber has supported Northeast Lakeview College prior to its inception and was an advocate for an institution of higher education in northeast Bexar County that helped pass the bond to establish NLC more than a decade ago.
Northeast Lakeview College completed the requirements for recognition at the Engagement Level by the Quality Texas Foundation (QTF). The Engagement Level is for those organizations that have made a commitment to use performance improvement principles but are new institutions or are new in their performance excellence journey. The Quality Texas Foundation assists organizations with continuous improvement efforts by utilizing the Baldrige Framework and since 1993, QTF has administered the Texas Award for Performance Excellence (TAPE) as an independent non-profit corporation. Winning TAPE symbolizes that the organization is one of the best in the state of Texas-based upon a very rigorous and robust process. QTF has also had many organizations also win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and lead all the other states in this area. The next step for Northeast Lakeview College is to submit for recognition at the Progress Level.

Northeast Lakeview College is also committed to changing lives outside of the classroom and received the Pacesetter Award from the United Way for an 82% employee participation rate in the Employee Giving Campaign, the highest participation rate amongst the Alamo Colleges District. The Employees Giving Back campaign raises funds for scholarships that directly benefit Northeast Lakeview College students. Additionally, employees can donate to their charity of choice, through the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, which the largest private investor in health and human services programs. Over the years, our employees, students, and families have benefited from their services. Dr. Debbie Hamilton, Vice President for Student Success, was recognized at the ALAS event on December 8. She received the Trusted Leader Award for inspiring trust in 2017. The Alamo Colleges Leadership Academy for Success (ALAS) utilizes the principles of leadership based on Stephen Covey. The group periodically recognizes individuals throughout the district who best exemplify these principles.
The Public Relations Office received recognition from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR). They received three awards from the organization for design and publicity. NCMPR is a professional organization that represents the fields of marketing and public relations for community and technical colleges. Since 2008, the NLC Public Relations Office has received more than 10 recognition and awards from this organization.
Tanae Cherron Nious and Jake Torres, both recent graduates, were awarded the prestigious Terry Scholarship, and combined, the students received more than $90K to continue their education. The Terry Foundation's mission is to improve and develop the State of Texas by assisting Texas students to attend the state's finest public universities. The Foundation hopes that these students will have a significant impact on the future leadership of the state and nation. Tanae will attend Texas Women's University and study Social Work. Jake will transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio to study Business Administration.
Ahmet Aksoy, Certified Advisor at NLC, is one of four participants awarded the Thomas Moorman Fellowship Program for the Texas Association of College & University Student Personnel Administrators (TACUSPA). TACUSPA is the premier association for student affairs professionals in Texas. Its purpose is to provide leadership, support, development, research, and best practices in the field of student development for professionals that work in colleges and universities in the state. Fourteen applicants across the state applied for the fellowship with nine applicants being granted an interview. Among this year's four participants, Ahmet was the only participant to be awarded from a community college.
Dr. Cleary, NLC Interim President, received one of the distinguished C-Suite Awards presented by the San Antonio Business Journal. On September 22, Cleary was featured in the publication and the article includes some of Cleary's employment highlights and more about his management style and what he finds interesting about his career.
2016 NLC graduate, Edgar Acevedo-Banuelos, was awarded the Terry Scholarship to attend The University of Texas-San Antonio in Fall 2016. As a Terry Transfer Scholar, he is one of 20 transfer students to receive a full scholarship to their attendance at UTSA. Terry Transfer Scholars receive $16,200 per year for up to 3 years and one additional study abroad semester. Terry Scholars commit to giving back to the university, the community, and the Terry Foundation. The "pay it forward" commitment seeks to empower both current and future generations of Terry Scholars. Edgar is majoring in Electrical Engineering at UTSA and is also enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program. Mr. Acevedo- Banuelos is the third NLC student to receive this scholarship.
Dr. Archie Wortham, Professor of Speech, received the Community Impact Award from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority San Antonio Alumnae Chapter. He was recognized during the organization's 45th Southwest Regional Conference held in San Antonio, TX for his continued service to the community. He is noted for his efforts to support initiatives that specifically impact males in education and society as a whole and is recognized by his peers for his dedication to developing programs in this area. The Delta Sigma Theta San Antonio Chapter was founded in 1933 and is committed to initiating and supporting programs and activities that address economic, educational, health, societal and political issues in the community.
Northeast Lakeview College received the Quality Texas Foundation (QTF) Pioneer Level Award (Beginner Level) at the recent 23rd Annual Quest for Excellence Conference held in San Antonio, TX. Northeast Lakeview College submitted its Organizational Profile for review and feedback by QTF. The organizational profile is the first step of the Baldrige Framework and by completing the five-page entry, organizations can better evaluate their current position and how to significantly improve by prioritization of improvement steps. In FY 2017, Northeast Lakeview College will also submit for the Quality Texas Foundation Engagement Recognition Level that includes the submission of an organizational profile and a ten-page application.
Three projects at Northeast Lakeview College received an Innovation Grant sponsored by the Alamo Colleges Foundation. Committed to supporting innovative pedagogy, each of the five Alamo Colleges received $10,000 in grant funds from the Foundation to be competitively awarded. The Innovation Grant Program encourages faculty and staff to provide innovative instruction and/or co-curricular support that positively impacts student learning, persistence, and completion.
