Northeast Lakeview College (NLC) gains Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Designation. To earn this designation, institutions of higher education should have a student body of 25% or more Hispanics & high percentage of students must be qualified for federal student loans or grants. HSI provides several added benefits, including recruiting and funding purposes. NLC can now apply for grants using HSI designation which opens the possibility for more funding opportunities. As an added benefit, HSI institutions wave the 25% for matching Federal Work-Study payments. NLC began working towards HSI designation after receiving its accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
Northeast Lakeview College expanded its educational offerings to include two associate of applied science degrees (A.A.S.) in Information Technology -Cybersecurity and Information Technology - Network Administrator. Students in the program will be crossed enrolled at both Texas A&M and NLC. They will take courses through the Alamo Colleges District and enroll in one engineering course each semester through Texas A&M, but taught at NLC. Students successfully completing the first few engineering courses in this program will be eligible to enroll and complete an engineering program at Texas A&M University. The program has already been successful at several other community colleges, including Blinn, Houston Community College, and El Centro.
Effective for the 2017-2018 academic year, students can now designate Northeast Lakeview College as their primary institution and be eligible for federal financial aid. Prior to this, students requiring federal financial aid would have to designate San Antonio College (SAC) as their primary institution to receive their student aid and take classes at NLC.
