To address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the rapidly evolving job market, Northeast Lakeview College is seeking approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to prepare students for Database Administration and Powerline Worker fields.

On January 23, 2024, the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the opportunity for NLC to approve submission to the Texas Higher Coordinating Board for two new workforce education programs - an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Database Administrator and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Powerline Worker.

Both programs represent a significant step toward meeting the demands of the workforce in the coming years. The innovative programs, short completion timeline, alignment and partnership with local industry highlight the commitment of NLC in preparing students for fulfilling careers in high-wage, high-demand fields.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission's Labor Analysis, Database Administrator careers are projected to experience a 25.1% growth by 2030.

The program, designed to be completed within 16 months, will feature an innovative eight-week format, providing students with a flexible experience. With a commitment to workforce development, the program anticipates adding 20 annual completers to the workforce, contributing to the projected 1,271 jobs in the Alamo Region and 16,009 jobs across Texas by 2030.

The second program under consideration is the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Powerline Worker. With a 35.7% growth projected for Powerline Worker careers in the San Antonio area by 2030, this program is designed to cater to the needs of the evolving job market.

Entry-level high-demand careers in this field include Powerline Workers and Telecommunication Line Workers. The program's curriculum aligns with registered apprenticeship programs of local power supply and distribution companies in San Antonio, making it the first of its kind apprenticeship program for NLC.

The Powerline Worker program expects to add 20 annual completers to the workforce, contributing to the projected 988 jobs in the Alamo Region and 12,428 jobs in Texas by 2030.

These programs are pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
