What is the Philosophy program?Philosophy is the study of principles of human existence, including truth, reasoning, ethics and more, with a goal of understanding our increasingly complex world and our place in it. What will I learn?You’ll learn a systematic process to think through the challenging issues of our times as you strengthen your skills in thinking, speaking, reading and writing. You’ll develop an understanding of systems of logical reasoning, ethical thought and moral value and how they may be applied to real-world issues and problems. You’ll study logic and the structure of formal arguments and proofs. You’ll also learn about world religions and cultures and the history of philosophy. |
What can I do with this course of study?You’ll be prepared to continue your education by transferring to a four-year institution. Philosophy provides an advantage in many fields such as law, medicine, engineering and science because it emphasizes the development of clear, logical and critical thinking and writing. Philosophy can be a pathway to careers in emerging fields such as bioethics and technology ethics. The study of philosophy and its focus on rigorous thinking, logic and ethics is of vital importance today as humanity faces new questions in fields including technology, healthcare, data collection, communications, artificial intelligence and more, requiring us to think critically about concepts shaping modern life. What's special about this program?The faculty members in SAC’s Philosophy program have many and varied types of expertise within the field. Our program stresses high-level teaching to help students fully engage with the course material to understand the arguments and issues at hand. Each semester we offer faculty-led symposiums and a symposium of student papers. Our student philosophy club focuses on the issues of sustainability and environmentalism. Faculty members often lead book groups with interested students. |
