What is the EMT program?

This program prepares you to become an entry-level EMT or paramedic with the skills to provide advanced life support in a wide variety of emergencies, both in the field and in a hospital emergency department.

What will I learn?

You will learn the skills to provide lifesaving care for patients who are ill or injured. You’ll be able to assess a patient’s condition and manage respiratory, cardiac and trauma emergencies. Paramedics provide more advanced life support than EMTs, with the training to administer medications orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs), perform endotracheal intubations, and use monitors and other complex equipment.

What can I do with this course of study?

An EMT-Basic certification prepares you to care for patients at the scene of an accident and while transporting patients to the hospital under the direction of more highly trained medical personnel. An AAS Degree is required for paramedics who wish to obtain a paramedic licensure from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The program is a pathway to a variety of careers in medicine, including nurses, physicians, physician assistants, dispatchers, instructors or emergency medical equipment sales. You can also use the program to evaluate your interest in healthcare before training as a nurse, physician or other healthcare worker.

What is special about the program?

The Emergency Medical Services degree program offers the only AAS Paramedic Degree in the San Antonio metropolitan area. The program also offers a college Certificate Level II in Paramedic and an Occupational Skills Award Certificate in EMT-Basic. An AAS degree is often an advantage in hiring and promotion processes. Some fire and EMS agencies offer incentive pay for AAS degree holders.
