What is the program?

This program explores the role and function of public sector institutions including local, state and federal government agencies and nonprofit organizations.

What will I learn?

You’ll gain the skills and knowledge required to run an administrative staff or department in the public sector, with a focus on financial accounting, human resources, organizational management, problem-solving and budgeting. You’ll learn about governmental agencies, government and not-for-profit accounting principles, management, labor relations, public relations, ethics and urban planning, and other topics related to public sector entities.

What can I do with this course of study?

This program prepares you for entry-level positions at the city, state, county and federal levels of government and nonprofit organizations in roles such as human resources specialist, human services assistant, city planning clerk, accounting or auditing clerk, program specialist, information specialist, occupational safety specialist, legislative staffer or grant writer. You’ll also be prepared to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field.

What is special about the program?

This program includes opportunities for Level 1 certificates in Budgeting in the Public Sector, Labor Studies and Leadership in Public Service that can be completed in 21 hours or less, quickly giving you skills that you can apply in the workforce. You’ll also have the opportunity to get real-world experience in a public sector or nonprofit workplace in a practicum.
