August 15, 2023
The new officers for the Student Government Association (SGA) have been installed for the 2023-24 academic year. During a brief ceremony held in the Loftin Student Center, SAC President Dr. Naydeen González-De Jesús administered the oath of office to the students as they began their terms in office.
The SGA officers are:
- Desteny Espinoza – President
- Michael Valdez – Vice President
- Rebekah Solis – Secretary
- Jacob Pike – Treasurer
- Lisa Guerrero – Historian
- Gissel Jayasi – Parliamentarian
- Brandon Aviado – Student Commissioner/Student Trustee
- Emilia Gaither – Ex Officio
The SGA is mentored by an advisory council. Members are:
- Domino Figueroa, student success coordinator in Office of Student Life – Primary Advisor
- Melissa Sutherland, program coordinator for psychology – Faculty Champion
- Jacob-Aidan Martinez, director of Office of Student Life.
This school year, the officers want to work on communication with students.
“The goals we have for SGA are making sure our students know who we are and that we are here to serve them. We want to be available for every individual to feel free to contact us for support, guidance, or even just a helping hand,” said Espinoza, the new president, who is majoring in education.
“SGA will start implementing new communication techniques as well as distinct student outreach methods, to increase all student interest and engagement. We want every San Antonio College student to feel represented.”
Representation is a very important issue for Espinoza, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair.
“Before I came to San Antonio College, I had many other institutions deny me opportunities due to my disability without even giving me an opportunity to show my capability and passion for my education,” said Espinoza.
She added that she was greeted with open arms when she come to SAC and soon connected with others who were not afraid to reach out to her. They also encouraged her to get involved in campus life, which led here to run for student government.
“Using my platform as president, I can keep advocating for more opportunities and maintain that welcoming environment for other students and give them that second chance that SAC gave me,” she said.
