Second Academic Dismissal
What happens if I am placed on a 2nd Academic Dismissal from the Alamo Colleges District?
A 2nd Academic Dismissal occurs when students who were on first Academic Dismissal are not successful in the petitioning semester, or have another semester with their semester GPA below 2.0 and/ or do not meet all of the petition requirements. Students will receive a notification via their ACES email informing them once final grades have posted. Students placed on 2nd Academic Dismissal will be required to sit out one (1) full 16 week semester (Spring or Fall) as per the Alamo Colleges District policy. After one full 16-week semester, students must complete the petition process to be considered eligible for registration. No summer petitions are accepted at Northwest Vista College.
Students placed on 2nd Academic Dismissal do not have the option to petition without sitting out.
Petitioning does not guarantee approval of enrollment.
I have been notified that I am on 2nd Academic Dismissal. What steps must I take?
All students on 2nd Academic Dismissal will have to complete the petition for waiver of Academic Dismissal process. Prior to initiating the petition process, you must ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements listed below.
What are the eligibility requirements for petitioning to return from 2nd Academic Dismissal?
Click here view our Academic Dismissal Petition Process Page.
If you are not sure which level of dismissal you are on, you may send an email request to the Academic Standards team to have your record reviewed at nvc-ast@alamo.edu. Please include your full name and banner ID in the message.
Where do I obtain a Dismissal Packet?
Please review the Academic Dismissal Checklist for information to help you prepare for the petition process.
Academic Dismissal packets will be available through the PASS Canvas course (steps 3 and 4). Dismissal packets must be completed in full as directed in order to be considered. Acceptable file formats are PDF and Word. No other file formats are able to be viewed- this includes One Note and Google Docs. Students who submit incomplete packets or have not completed all eligibility requirements listed above will not have a Dismissal Interview scheduled until all requirements have been met, potentially resulting in the inability to enroll in the desired semester. If you have any questions about how to fill out any parts of the petition packet, you may contact the Academic Standards team by email at nvc-ast@alamo.edu.
What are my responsibilities as a student on a 2nd Academic Dismissal at Northwest Vista College?
If your petition is approved, you will be expected to meet the following requirements:
- Actively attend and participate in all enrolled classes, including the mandatory Strategies for Success (SDEV0171) course
- Complete all courses (including the SDEV0171 course) with a "C" or higher
- Complete the Level 1 Learning 2 Lead Certification in AlamoExperience
- Visit with your assigned academic advisor at least once during the petitioning semester, preferably prior to the start of registration for the upcoming semester.
- Utilize the recommended support services and success strategies discussed during your advising interview
- Earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Continually earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or above until in good standing (cumulative institution GPA of 2.0) is reached in order to remain enrolled.
- Continuously meet with your assigned advisor each semester until in good standing
- Comply with all contractual requirements discussed during dismissal interview.
Students whose petitions are approved and do not comply with all the responsibilities outlined above may result in the student having to sit out a full 16-week semester, and must re-petition after the sit-out period. Not earning a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher will automatically place you on the next level of dismissal.
In addition to the policies above, students previously enrolled in a semester prior to petitioning will be required to reduce their course loads to the maximum 6-8 credit hours. If you have not reduced your enrollment hours by the first day of classes, the Academic Standards team may drop you from the last enrolled courses to reduce your course load to the maximum hours.
There is no option to petition the sit-out requirement once a student is placed on 3rd/Permanent Academic Dismissal.
When will I be back in Good Academic Standing?
Students are placed back in Good Academic Standing when both their overall institutional and semester GPA's are a 2.0 or higher. Once a student is back in Good Academic Standing their registration hold will be expired and their enrollment hours will be restored to full time. Dismissal students may be required to complete an exit interview survey which is provided by email.
